The Naso Tang is a striking and active marine fish known for its streamlined body, long snout, and attractive coloration. It is a popular choice for large reef aquariums because of its excellent algae-grazing habits and peaceful nature.

Family: Acanthuridae (Surgeonfish and Tang family)

Scientific Name: Naso lituratus

Common Name: Naso Tang, Orangespine Unicornfish

Behavior:

Active, energetic, and generally peaceful with other fish. It spends much of its time swimming in open water and grazing on algae. It may become territorial toward other tangs, particularly in smaller aquariums. Providing plenty of swimming space helps reduce aggression.

Diet:

Primarily herbivorous. Offer a varied diet of marine algae, nori/seaweed, spirulina, algae-based pellets, and other vegetable-based foods. Regular access to algae is important for maintaining good health and coloration.

Size:

Can grow to approximately 18 inches (45 cm) in length.

Reef Safe:

Yes, generally reef safe. Naso Tangs are excellent algae grazers and normally leave corals and most reef invertebrates alone.

Best Aquarium:

A very large, mature marine or reef aquarium of at least 180 gallons (680 liters) is recommended, with a larger aquarium preferred for adult specimens. Provide extensive open swimming space, plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water movement, and excellent oxygenation.

Care Level:

Intermediate to Advanced

Summary:

The Naso Tang is an impressive, active, and generally reef-safe fish that makes a spectacular addition to a large marine aquarium. Its attractive appearance, peaceful temperament, and strong algae-grazing ability make it a popular choice for experienced reef aquarists. Because of its large adult size and active swimming behavior, a spacious aquarium is essential.
