The Bicolor Blenny is a small, colorful, and entertaining marine fish recognized by its distinctive two-tone body, with a darker front half and yellow-orange rear. It is a popular choice for reef aquariums because of its peaceful personality and algae-grazing behavior.

Family: Blenniidae (Blenny family)

Scientific Name: Ecsenius bicolor

Common Name: Bicolor Blenny

Behavior:

Generally peaceful and active, with plenty of personality. It spends much of its time perching on rocks and exploring the aquarium. It can become territorial toward other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling fish, so it is usually best kept as a single specimen.

Diet:

Primarily herbivorous. It naturally grazes on algae and microalgae growing on rocks. In captivity, offer marine algae, spirulina, algae-based pellets, and other vegetable-based foods. A mature aquarium with natural algae growth is especially beneficial.

Size:

Can grow to approximately 4 inches (10 cm) in length.

Reef Safe:

Yes, generally reef safe. The Bicolor Blenny is usually safe with corals and most reef invertebrates. However, individual fish may occasionally nip at fleshy corals or clam mantles.

Best Aquarium:

A mature marine or reef aquarium of at least 30 gallons (115 liters) is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock, algae-covered surfaces, caves, and hiding places. A secure lid is also recommended because blennies can jump.

Care Level:

Easy to Intermediate

Summary:

The Bicolor Blenny is a hardy, colorful, and personality-filled fish that makes an excellent addition to a mature reef aquarium. Its algae-grazing behavior helps keep rockwork clean, while its unique appearance and entertaining personality make it a favorite among marine aquarists.
